To the average person, seeing an orca in captivity is a truly amazing sight. A huge black-and-white creature, totally dominated by their diminutive trainer (usually a good-looking girl), must be a visual treat. But to my mind, if you are going to teach people about ducks, you don’t show them a Donald Duck cartoon. Orca in captivity are not a true representation of orca in the wild. They are a caricature, a comic strip – only it’s far from funny – of the real thing. It isn’t educational to teach people that it’s okay to mistreat animals and keep them in inappropriate cages without social, mental or physical stimulation. Showing people being ‘rocketed’ through the air on the end of an orca, or surfing an orca around a tank isn’t educational. Entertaining, no doubt. Money-making, for sure. Amazing to watch, absolutely. Educational, definitely not. Yes, some institutions make an effort at educating their audiences about the animals, but this is often out-of-date, extremely ‘filtered’ information which is superfluous to the ritz and glitz of the show.

Remember that you were art long before he came to admire you, and you’ll continue to be art even when he’s gone.
Everytime I finish a sketch/panting/collage/arty thing there are those few seconds afterwards where I think “hey maybe I’ll take a photo of this and post it on tumblr…I should put my art out into the world!”. And then I go on tumblr and see everyone else’s art and Im just like “NAHHH”
I think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Or party. Your grocery list. The food you make. How your writing looks. And the way you feel. Life is art.
